The Narrow Road to the Deep North is by Richard Flanagan.  This novel is written by an Australian and is a deep and dark story. ‘The Australian protagonist is a surgeon, Dorrigo Evans, who to his own amazement becomes legendary in postwar Australia for his wartime courage in the face of Japanese captors. By his middle years he is a national figure.’  About 450 pages.
